Quick answer

The letter A is the first letter of the alphabet. It looks like A (big) and a (small). It often makes the sound a, like at the start of apple and ant.

Letโ€™s learn

A is the first letter of the alphabet. It has two shapes:

  • Big A (capital letter): a pointy roof with a line across the middle.
  • Small a (lowercase letter): a round shape with a little tail.

What sound does A make?

A often says a, like at the start of these words:

  • ๐ŸŽ apple
  • ๐Ÿœ ant
  • ๐ŸŠ alligator

Say each word slowly and listen for the a at the start.

Letโ€™s practise

Draw a big A in the air with your finger: up, down, and a line across the middle. Now draw a small a: a circle, then a little line down the side.
