Multiplying and Dividing by 10 and 100

Ages 9โ€“11

You will learn

Multiply and divide whole numbers by 10 and 100 by moving the digits on a place value chart.

Before you start

Place value with thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.

Quick answer

When you multiply by 10, every digit moves 1 place to the left. When you multiply by 100, every digit moves 2 places to the left. Dividing moves the digits to the right instead. So 34 ร— 10 = 340 and 340 รท 10 = 34.

Letโ€™s learn

Multiplying by 10 makes a number 10 times bigger. Each digit moves 1 place to the left.

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
3 4
3 4 0

34 ร— 10 = 340. The 0 fills the empty ones place.

Multiplying by 100

Multiplying by 100 moves each digit 2 places to the left.

  • 8 ร— 100 = 800
  • 25 ร— 100 = 2,500

Dividing by 10 and 100

Dividing does the opposite. The digits move to the right.

  • 90 รท 10 = 9 (1 place right)
  • 3,600 รท 100 = 36 (2 places right)

Try it

Start with 7. Multiply by 10, then by 10 again. What do you get? Is it the same as 7 ร— 100?
