Place Value to 10,000

Ages 9โ€“11

You will learn

Know what each digit in a 4-digit number is worth, compare 4-digit numbers, and round to the nearest thousand.

Before you start

Tens and ones, and hundreds in 3-digit numbers.

Quick answer

In a 4-digit number, the digits stand for thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. In 3,482 the 3 is worth 3,000, the 4 is worth 400, the 8 is worth 80 and the 2 is worth 2.

Letโ€™s learn

In a 4-digit number, each place has a different value.

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
3 4 8 2

3,482 = 3,000 + 400 + 80 + 2

Zero holds a place

In 5,062 there are no hundreds, so we write a 0 in the hundreds place. Without it, the number would be 562, which is much smaller!

Comparing numbers

Start with the biggest place (thousands) and move right until the digits are different.

  • 6,345 or 6,354? Thousands: same. Hundreds: same. Tens: 4 and 5. So 6,354 is bigger.

Rounding to the nearest thousand

Look at the hundreds digit.

  • 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 โ†’ round down: 2,300 โ†’ 2,000
  • 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 โ†’ round up: 2,700 โ†’ 3,000
