Taking Away within 10

Ages 5โ€“7

You will learn

Take away a number from a number up to 10 and find how many are left.

Before you start

Counting objects to 10, and counting back from 10.

Quick answer

Taking away (subtraction) means finding how many are left when some go away. For example, 5 โˆ’ 2 = 3, because if you have 5 things and 2 go away, 3 are left.

Letโ€™s learn

Taking away means some things go away, and we find how many are left.

The โˆ’ sign means take away (we also say โ€œminusโ€).

Example

๐Ÿธ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿธ โ†’ 2 frogs hop away โ†’ ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿธ

5 โˆ’ 2 = 3

A quick trick: count back

  1. Start at the first number. Hold it in your head.
  2. Count back the number you take away.

For 7 โˆ’ 3: start at 7, then count back 6, 5, 4. So 7 โˆ’ 3 = 4.

Taking away zero

Taking away 0 means nothing goes away. The number stays the same: 6 โˆ’ 0 = 6.

Check what you know

Choose an answer, then press Check. You can try again if you need to.

  1. 1 What is 5 โˆ’ 2?
  2. 2 What is 8 โˆ’ 1?
  3. 3 What is 6 โˆ’ 6?
  4. 4 There are 7 birds. 3 fly away. How many are left?
  5. 5 What is 9 โˆ’ 4?
  6. 6 What is 10 โˆ’ 0?

Try this next

Put 10 toys on the table. Hide some under a cloth. How many are left? How many did you hide?
