Adding Numbers up to 10

Ages 5โ€“7

You will learn

Add two numbers together when the answer is 10 or less.

Before you start

Counting objects to 10.

Quick answer

Adding means putting groups together to find how many there are altogether. For example, 3 + 2 = 5, because 3 things and 2 more things make 5 things.

Letโ€™s learn

Adding means putting groups together to find how many altogether.

The + sign means add (we say โ€œplusโ€). The = sign means is the same as (we say โ€œequalsโ€).

Example

๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ + ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ = ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ

3 + 2 = 5

A quick trick: count on

  1. Start with the bigger number. Hold it in your head.
  2. Count on the smaller number.

For 6 + 3: start at 6, then count 7, 8, 9. So 6 + 3 = 9.

Adding zero

Adding 0 means adding nothing. The number stays the same: 7 + 0 = 7.

Check what you know

Choose an answer, then press Check. You can try again if you need to.

  1. 1 What is 2 + 3?
  2. 2 What is 4 + 4?
  3. 3 What is 6 + 1?
  4. 4 What is 5 + 0?

Try this next

Make up your own adding story. For example: I had 3 toy cars and got 2 more. How many now?
