The 2 Times Table

Understand multiplication as equal groups and know the 2 times table up to 10 × 2.

Adding, and counting in 2s (2, 4, 6, 8…).

Quick answer

Multiplying by 2 means making 2 equal groups, or doubling. For example, 4 × 2 = 8, because 4 groups of 2 make 8, and double 4 is 8.

Multiplication is a quick way to add equal groups.

The × sign means times or groups of.

Example

That is 3 groups of 2 shoes. 3 × 2 = 2 + 2 + 2 = 6

Multiplying by 2 is doubling

Times 2 is the same as doubling (adding a number to itself):

  • 3 × 2 = 3 + 3 = 6
  • 6 × 2 = 6 + 6 = 12
