Robo Learns to Say Sorry

Ages 7โ€“9

Robo was the newest pupil at Maple Hill School. He was a shiny silver robot with blinking blue eyes, and he was always in a hurry.

โ€œReading time!โ€ called Ms. Lane.

Robo zoomed across the classroom to the reading corner, whirr, clank, whirr, and CRASH!

He had knocked over Miaโ€™s block tower. Blocks tumbled everywhere.

Miaโ€™s eyes filled with tears. โ€œI worked on that all morning!โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t my fault,โ€ said Robo quickly. โ€œThe tower was in the way.โ€

Mia turned away. Roboโ€™s circuits began to buzz in a strange, uncomfortable way. He did not like this feeling at all.

At lunchtime, Robo asked Ms. Lane, โ€œWhy do my circuits feel buzzy?โ€

Ms. Lane smiled kindly. โ€œI think you might need to say sorry. A good apology has three steps. First, say what happened. Second, say sorry. Third, try to make it right.โ€

Robo thought about this very carefully. Then he rolled over to Mia.

โ€œMia,โ€ he said, โ€œI was rushing, and I knocked over your tower. Iโ€™m sorry. Can I help you build it again?โ€

Mia looked at Robo for a long moment. Then she smiled. โ€œOkay. You can hold the blocks steady. Your hands donโ€™t wobble!โ€

Together they built the tower again, block by block. Because Roboโ€™s hands never wobbled, this time it grew taller than ever before, almost up to the ceiling!

Roboโ€™s circuits stopped buzzing. Instead, they hummed a happy little tune.

The lesson: A good apology says what happened, says sorry, and tries to make it right.
